False pre-purchase inspection on car – California.?
I bought a car in late December from Southern California. I live in Northern CA. As luck would have it – there was a Mercedes Repair shop nest door to the used car dealer that had the car. They did a pre-purchase inspection on the car (95 E320) which showed nothing. I few paint flaws – that is all. I was a bit worried and called the mechanic and he said the car was great – almost too good. He did mention that the used car dealer was his tenant.
After I go the car home I drove it about 6 times in the next month. Then the check engine light went on so I took it into the repair shop. They found over $5000 worth of repairs needed for the car – not just little ones. Big items that I specifically asked the dealer and mechanic about. The head gasket for example. That is shot as well as just about all the suspension system. I have the fax of the pre-purchase inspection and an email from the dealer saying the car was checked and needs nothing. What recourse do I have?

In California all used car sales are as is. Verbal statements do not count and can not be used in court.
As far as the Repaor shop next door, he can say sorry I missed it. At best you could get back what he charged for the inspection.
This is why I never buy a car w/o a warranty
